The Anzac Day Amendment Act 2026 clarifies that Anzac Day is a day of commemoration in New Zealand.

For all New Zealanders, and particularly those involved in organising or participating in Anzac Day commemorations, the law now states the day’s core purpose.  The recent Anzac Day Amendment Act 2026 reinforces the national significance of 25th April as a day dedicated to remembrance.  This clarification provides a firm legal foundation for the traditions and ceremonies that mark this important date in the New Zealand calendar.

The amendment, a concise update to the existing Anzac Day Act 1966, directly addresses the day’s fundamental meaning.  The Act replaces Section 2 of the original legislation with a new section that explicitly defines Anzac Day as a “day of commemoration.”  While New Zealanders have always understood the spirit of Anzac Day as one of remembrance, this amendment removes any potential ambiguity and provides a statutory basis for its observance.
